Methods of Primary Research

I have accumulated a wide range of research thus far for my work; I have explored art therapy and theory, outsider arts, surrealism, and automatism. To further this research I feel it is important to pursue primary research sources, this is to gain indepth contextual material. I would like to further understand the practice of art therapy and psychoanalysis in association with arts and identity, therefore I have arranged a variety of helpful research activities.

Planning Research

Primary research – Automatism

I have dedicated a journal to the practice of automatist response work, I will create a body of drawings, paintings, collage and writing to begin the exploration of the mind.

Interview with Fokkina McDonnel – 24/11/18

I have an upcoming interview with Fokkina McDonnell, award winning poet, published writer and former psychoanalyst – I will be asking her a variety of questions about her role as a psychoanalyst as well as collecting her views on my art theory and arts role in supporting mental health.

Art Therapy Session with Yr 1 Art Students 29/11/18

I will be directing art therapy sessions with a group of art students exercising their creativity through automatist processes and free self directed play. I will be using the research from my interviews to further mold the design of my class, applying key points and features found within relative research.

CARA
Alison Alborz

Meeting with Dr Alison M Alborz 01/12/18

Talking with Dr Alison M Alborz, a Doctor in Philosophy and a lecturer at the Manchester University is crucial for my research. I feel speaking with Alison about my themes and theory is essential as she has studied each topic of my work including philosophy, psychology and art. Therefore her input will give my work great insight and direction.

Visual Questionnaire 10/12/18

Using the books: Man and his Symbols by Carl Jung and Languages of Art by Nelson Goodman, I will produce a visual questionnaire exploring a similar practice to Roschach’s inkblot test and personality projection methods, this will gather a variety of individual response’s to direct my work. This questionnaire will consist of inputs and outputs for example they will explain what the image looks like but then they must also draw the feeling for abstract exploration of the self – these can be compared and used to celebrate identity and in itself develop visual stimulus for later inspiration. I may also briefly refer to these books and general symbolism theory to further understand the results.

Development Work

I continued developing my ideas and visual work after repsonding to artists and primary research, I decided to further explore paint, print and textiles.
Painted Illustration

I wanted to further explore paint as I only lightly used this in my previous work, I wanted to continue playing around with soft colours and effects attemtping to work up a feeling of nostalgia and time.

Printing

I developed a design when I came up with the idea of printing, I wanted to involve ideas of community, travel, transport, life, past and present. I created five designs and selected the one I felt would look the most aesthetically pleasing.

I used colours in my prints that could refer to time of day, darks and lights to explore life throughout the seasons.

Textiles

I decided to further my textiles development by combining print and stitch, sewing detail and outlines along the printed design.

I feel it would be important next time to use artistic values such as contrast and quality fabric and thread.

Secondary: Artist Response

I created some pieces in response to my artist research, exploring processes, ideas and effects to develop my visual work.

Illustration and Paint –

I created these drawings to exlpore a variety of illustration effects inspired by the works of Bob Dylan, Simone Ridyard and Nanami Cowdroy.

Textiles

After creating a body of illustrative response work I wanted to further my ideas by introducing textiles, I used a recognisable building on palatine road in this stitch drawing, embroiding areas and windows to push shape and detail through the sample.

Thread Drawing

I was inspired by Debbie Smyth to further my textiles approach and use thread drawings that come off the surface, I used imagery by the river for this particularly the Heron sculpture at the park.

Wood Etch

I had the idea of pulling the river into my work by using nature, I felt by using a wooden canvas for drawing or etching I could explore the urban lanscape in relation to its close rural paths.

Automatism – Primary Research

Surrealist automatism is an artistic process in which the artist burys concious control over the making process, activating the unconscious mind.

Personal practice
I have been exercising automatic drawing on lose pieces of paper while I find myself in a relaxed almost lethargic state before I go to bed, I have just got a a5 book to begin this routine – I will procude as many drawings as I fancy if not none at all every night before I go to bed and every morning when I wake up . I will be attempting to work from this book throughout my work exploring mental imagery and subconcious self through visuals, this will also respond to primary research and can be used as the visuals in a survey or questionnaire.

Primary Research: Northenden Village and Mersey River

Trip to Northenden Village and the river mersery 11.10.18

I visited Northenden Village to gain primary contextual research through drawing and photography; while I was there I made sure to take in all characteristics and qualities like street lamps, trees, spacious surrounding as well as emotional aspects of the village such as locals catching up and the sound birds and dog walkers by the river, I felt these properties were just as important as the features of the buildings and roads.

I have taken over 100 photos of the village and river to refer to throughout the development of my project – these are a few from my trip.
