School Mapping Project 2021

It has been amazing resuming the role of illustrator for this years School Mapping Project 2021, illustrating all educational buildings of Wythenshawe (up to 50 buildings! past and present). It has been an exciting challenge and I am elated to put these on the map and launch our material.

We are proud to announce the launch of our Wythenshawe School image project in partnership with artist Faye Tikic the Neighbourhood Investment Fund, Archives + local schools. Faye is drawing every school in Wythenshawe and will include some no longer standing. This exciting project raises awareness of the history of our Town and will promote the buildings and involvement from all. We’d like pupils and students to think about their own building, draw them, take photographs alongside teachers and send to us to really shine a light on these places of learning. I will create albums for each school with Faye’s art as the cover image. We look forward to sharing your work as part of the Wythenshawe Wide School Mapping Project! Here’s a link to Faye’s page, check out her portfolio and we hope aspiring artists in our schools can get creative 🤗 – John-Paul Coe

“It is a real honour to be able to partner fantastic artist Faye Tikic on this project. Faye not only produces wonderful images for those of all ages to enjoy but engages the local community and our schools during and after the creative process.

Via funding kindly provided by the Neighbourhood Investment Fund, Faye has undertaken the challenge to produce illustrations of Wythenshawe’s schools, colleges and some nurseries too after their response to be included. These images will sit on a map to give students and idea of local partners in education, which is vital as many do partner for important projects such as Rights Respecting events, Clean Air Day, Parliament Day and more.

This project aims to have student involvement in 2022 for them to share their images and illustrations of their schools and to share what they like about the buildings, grounds and more. We try to help to sign-post local community groups, businesses and support depending on local needs and greater knowledge helps massively as does highlighting the huge network of our educational facilities.

An exciting aspect of this project is the schools no longer with us. Faye has worked alongside the amazing staff at Manchester Archives + and local residents to discover lost schools and to illustrate those also.

This project helps students with their history with local knowledge of the past, geography with locations within our five wards and many more aspects of learning include art and design with architectural topics.

We at Wythenshawe Waste Warriors will help to build a body of work, history and evidence for each school and college here in Wythenshawe. From past pupil’s photographs and memories to present day projects, we believe all are important to the community fabric of this great town.

We can’t thank Faye enough for the work produced in partnership and are looking forward to 2022 when we can visit some of our schools to workshop and to collate their contributions. Due to the many lockdowns and the recent pandemic, we will now exhibit Faye’s work alongside Wythenshawe’s student’s next year. This will be a wonderful event to look forward to for all involved in the process. Thanks Faye, NIF, Local Archive Team, The School Mapping Project, Your Local Voice and to all our Wythenshawe students and educators.”

School Mapping Project 2020

About the Project

wwwWythenshawe waste warriors, School Mapping Project set out to raise funds for the Snowdrop Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital Charity. This project aimed to educate local schools and connect residents to their local area and amentities. The wonderful work involved would be showcased at an event on May 21st however, due to Covid 19 concerns, the event was rescheduled. The project so far had raised £1,320.66. The snowdrop unit cares for families suffering from a baby loss, these funds aim to build a second bereavement room to enhance the privacy and mental wellbeing of suffering parents and families.

Wythenshawe Waste Warriors have contacted all 35 schools and colleges in Wythenshawe, asking students to map their local area and to put the logos of any business, group or community asset they feel is important to record.

Each school has been asked to be responsible for mapping a small section of Wythenshawe, using resources provided by Manchester Central Library Archive Department and their wonderful team, including large maps, old photos.

School Mapping Project – Event Poster Design

As well as working with Newall Green Primary School and designing a map of their local assets, I was asked to design the offical poster for the main event. It has been a wonderful experience working on this project and I am pleased to say I will be working as an illustrator on the next School Mapping project 2021. Stay tuned!

“A huge thank-you Faye from all at
Wythenshawe Waste Warriors for your
fantastic and hugely appreciated original artwork and poster. This piece perfectly reflects our event and we feel you have exactly captured the essence of
Wythenshawe’s ‘Garden City’ with the green branches
cascading overhead.
Your impressions of Wythenshawe Hall and the Cromwell
statue are first class and we feel honoured to be associated with your work Thanks a million”

Newall Green Primary School – Workshop

In partnership with Wythenshawe Waste Warriors & Cllr Mary Monaghan

My role within this project exercised myself as an artist and designer. Designing a detailed map, a promotional poster and working with Cllr Mary Monaghan at Newall Green Primary School; guiding a mapping workshop of their local area.

Guiding mapping workshop at Newall Green Primary School

This session focused on developing an outline of their green spaces and local assets. we used a range of images from google maps, drawing a large scale outline of their school, local shops, roads, parks and trees. The children were wonderful to work with, very creative and clever. Once we had a basic outline on A2 paper, I took it with me to digitise and develop on Photoshop.

NGM MAP

I had a great time working with the year 6 class. We were able to develop a wonderful outline that was very accurate. Lots of the class were excited about finding their homes on the map, in this spirit I decided to involve a green house to symbolise some of their homes.

Finalised map

“We are all so grateful for Faye’s involvement in this project. Her artistic eye and expertise has been tremendous and the pupils of Newall Green have benefitted first hand from her workshop and talent.

The asset map Faye has produced is the perfect template for our digitised map of Wythenshawe and those looking at it will instantly understand what our aims are. This work will inspire others to add their logos on other schools maps to inform pupils and residents of their local assets. Faye has also produced a stunning body of work illustrating local historic buildings and monuments which she has compiled to create a colouring book. Faye has kindly offered sets of these images for one lucky school to win as a prize. Thank-you Faye! “
