Existing product: Research

To fulful potential in design and aesthetic, I have been referring to a range of relevant magazines. Luckily, I have been collecting: Art Quartlery, Psychologies and Leisure Painter magazines for a few years now so I have an available mass of research to dive into. will disect the elements and themes of the piece while collecting other example products for further development. Below I have scanned in some reference magazines to give an idea of what I’m looking at as demonstration.

Example Magazines

I have been using these front covers as an example for composition and aesthetic, I have noticed in all issues, they display the article titles under the top magazine title, containing information together allowing the majority of space to be a visually stimulating and in theme with the magazine itself.

FRONT COVERS OF ART QUARTERLY

ARTICLES

Psychologies & Leisure Painter

I have been using this magazine to understand how to target an audience without art, using the front cover as an example of young audience, perhaps using a celebrity on each issue to appeal to the viewers? I have noticed a range of rhetorical questions, pehaps this directly speaks to the audience? I will explore these options in later development.

I have been using this magazine as an example for interactive exercises, displaying demonstrations of painting and techniques to inspire the viewer to paint along, I feel this could be intergrated into my magazine, maybe in a way the viewer can draw and write within the book.

Organisation & Planning

project planning

I have been using a variety of time management methods since the beginning of this project. I have been employing two project planners and a document for recording and dating to do lists. The above project planner is used for my over all progress, logging a pre-planned vision of the weeks of my project. I mainly use a daily planner, which breaks these weeks into days, this way I am able to reference my overall plan in relation to my current work and to do lists. This allows me to allocate tasks into days, while referencing my overall plan to ensure all is on track. I have updated these as I go, tracking development and enabling an organised system of planning as the project unfolds.

WYTHENSHAW HISTORY GROUP

Attending the Anual General Meeting at the forum reference library.

I have been working with Now and Forever Heritage in producing illustrated works for a tour guide book, I have been fulfiling potential by becoming a member of the wythenshawe history group and accessing the local archival library, this on top of frequent meetings with the client has directed great development. My last meeting was on the 6th of march, we toured around Northenden in great depth and ended up at costa discussing maps, theme and routes. We ended the meeting by discussing potential roles and voluntry work involved in wythenshawe history group where I was asked to become the communications and publicity officer in the upcoming Anual General Meeting on Monday.

I will be using the walk and routes discussed to begin developing further samples and potential designs. This will be furthered by attending the official walk in a few weeks time.

Audience and direction

After thinking about the audience, I decided to consider further aspects in narrowing down my target market. To do this I thought about who needs this product most and who would benefit best from this cause, I had intitally felt soliders and refugees or victims of war were a fitting target audience. After researching the help given to soliders and refugees currently got me thinking about those who aren’t entitiled to help or dont desire or think to sought professional therapy or medication.

I feel by supporting this audience we can help everyday individuals overcome depression, anxiety and stress through small improvment exercises, batting away depression while maintaining positive well-being, encouraging the movement of art on mind while demonstrating the affects.

Interview with Dr Alborz

During my previous project, I met with Alison Alborz a psychologyst and researcher for the Manchester University. I felt it would be helpful to have another chat with her about my current ideas regarding the art therapy book. We were able to converse about the purpose, effectivity, theme and process of the book, leading important ideas into development.

We spoke about the different approaches and purposes of the book such as its use for the art therapist as research and perhaps the idea of individual production, producing them individually for the partiular patient. By exploring the importance of audience which in my case is: soldiers and refugees it became apparent that each of these individuals would need personal themes as they could also pose as triggers.

We spoke about potential ideas for the book, perhaps a book each solider would carry embodying the identity of home such as key-rings, flowers, blankets to the idea of creating a post war rememberance book of their military family.

War memorial, Northenden, 1921 unvieling ceremony

This meeting has made me think mostly about my audience, I have realised I must focus either on soliders, or refugees not both. This is because they are very different audiences and cannot provide effective treatment for both as they are suffering from different stresses of war. By producing something for both, I felt it is unempathetic and unethical therefore I feel it is important to rethink the importance of my audience and in that I can begin the development of my practical themes.
