Imperial War Museum Trip 11/02/19

Primary Research

I visited the Imperial War Museum North in Salford Quays, to gain some primary research on soldiers and trench art. Here, I was able to observe an array of well crafted works by soldiers as well as catch the end of the “Lest We Forget?” exhibition, providing great insight into the disturbing nature of war.

I felt inspired by a range of portraiture works taken by Museum photographers Ricard Ash and Damon Clearly as part of a war story project.

This series depicted portraits of soldiers serving in Afganistan. These were initially purposed for adiministrive records however shared to give us a glimpse of the person behind the uniform – I feel captivated by this work, I feel working with portraiture could offer a powerful approach in illustration combined with visualisation methods as a developed exercise.
