I presented a display of samples along with a my project files, sketchbook and visual sheets.
During my presentation we discussed the journey of my project such as development and samples for final outcomes e.g. wall hanging, photo album, 3d thread sculpture. I was happy to provide a range of processes and different styles to stimulate my audience. I used the visuals as a platform to explain my ideas.
My illustrated drawings were selected as my final process for development, they said they feel my drawings held direct appreciation and acknowledgment of Northenden Village. I will use this feedback to develop my final piece.

I’m pleased with the feedback as at this point, my ideas are flexible and can transfer well. Next, I’ll be developing my series of illustrations and research pricing details of my final outcome.
These are the samples I have developed and selected to present when meeting with the Northenden Client’s; I have chosen each piece to inform them of my development ideas and practical direction as well presenting them with my sketchbook and work file to talk through my journey.
I was inspired by Nanami Cowdroy here, I wanted to explore soft and hard effects together to unite the emotions of the river and urban landscape of the village.
Today I experienced a performance by OddArts, this organisation performs activites, workshops and plays to settle societal and social conflicts.
The session began by discussing up-bringing in relation to identity, after the speaker called a statement, we would either stand left, or right to signify our views; some were aksed why they were stood there and why they feel that way – I felt this was a great experience for my work as I could gain insight into peoples understanding of themselves in relation to influences and up-bringing and how this affects societal views and personality later in life.
I was quite vocal in the discussion, I added words such as identity and influence to see how this would drive the conversation though remained reserved enough to listen to others input – most people in the group didn’t believe upbringing and early influence effect personality – I disagree. I didn’t think much about how others affect our sense of self but I feel this concept is important in the make up of identity and in that it is relevant to my work.
I felt it was crucial to develop samples for my presentation to display my work in a more so proffessional manor. I want to exhibit a variety of my development through a clean aesthetic and presentation.
Thread Drawing samples
I was pleased with my first thread drawing however I decided to produce a finalised sample for presentation. I decided to use imagery from my primary research to refer to aspects of the village.
Process –
I used a similar mdf board to produce this sample, I coated this in gold spray paint to add a sophisticated finish to the piece while also ensuring a vibrant background for my drawings. I then drew a brief outline of my image and began to hammer in 20mm pins along the lines.
I added a variety of threads and colours to explore different outcomes as well as presenting two very different techniques and effects to express the potential of this particular process.
Painting
I created a painting in response to the urban and rural landscape of Northenden, joining tones and textures of the two for abstract exploration.
I used colours from the river and village in an attempt to unite the two emotionally, I used shoppy strokes to indicate speed and movement. I admire how the light changes and different aspects are highlighted from the silver, indicating time of day and in that past and present.
I added this in to provide a interesting approach while painting, I decided to blend my colours with the paint leaving areas to shine on throughout the painting.
I felt inspired by Ravens work from Castle gallery to involve texture in my paint work. I used silver paint from the bottle to outline various lines in my work.
Sewing into print
I decided to use a piece of fabric soak in ink and white spirit to mimic tones of time, using yellow ink, I lightly printed my lino cut and used a combination of black and white thread to introduce detail to the sample. I did this to play with style and depth.
I feel next time I would use a more vibrant ink to bring out the detail and use embroidery to add texture.
I didn’t outline the entire sample however I feel this piece indicates potential.
I decided to use this design, I used repetition of busses and people along with important in theme text, I feel this piece emodies a clean design along with significant contextual features.
I have accumulated a wide range of research thus far for my work; I have explored art therapy and theory, outsider arts, surrealism, and automatism. To further this research I feel it is important to pursue primary research sources, this is to gain indepth contextual material. I would like to further understand the practice of art therapy and psychoanalysis in association with arts and identity, therefore I have arranged a variety of helpful research activities.
Planning Research
Primary research – Automatism
I have dedicated a journal to the practice of automatist response work, I will create a body of drawings, paintings, collage and writing to begin the exploration of the mind.
I have an upcoming interview with Fokkina McDonnell, award winning poet, published writer and former psychoanalyst – I will be asking her a variety of questions about her role as a psychoanalyst as well as collecting her views on my art theory and arts role in supporting mental health.
Art Therapy Session with Yr 1 Art Students 29/11/18
I will be directing art therapy sessions with a group of art students exercising their creativity through automatist processes and free self directed play. I will be using the research from my interviews to further mold the design of my class, applying key points and features found within relative research.

Meeting with Dr Alison M Alborz 01/12/18
Talking with Dr Alison M Alborz, a Doctor in Philosophy and a lecturer at the Manchester University is crucial for my research. I feel speaking with Alison about my themes and theory is essential as she has studied each topic of my work including philosophy, psychology and art. Therefore her input will give my work great insight and direction.
Visual Questionnaire 10/12/18
Using the books: Man and his Symbols by Carl Jung and Languages of Art by Nelson Goodman, I will produce a visual questionnaire exploring a similar practice to Roschach’s inkblot test and personality projection methods, this will gather a variety of individual response’s to direct my work. This questionnaire will consist of inputs and outputs for example they will explain what the image looks like but then they must also draw the feeling for abstract exploration of the self – these can be compared and used to celebrate identity and in itself develop visual stimulus for later inspiration. I may also briefly refer to these books and general symbolism theory to further understand the results.
FAYE TIKIC
